La Peyrecout Gîtes - Places to Visit

La Peyrecout is in the beautiful unspoiled Pays des Bastides area of Tarn in South West France part of the area known collectively as the Midi-Pyrenees. We are close to the many bastide towns unique to the South West of France.

Tarn (81)
Cordes-sur-Ciel Cordes-sur-Ciel is one of the most beautiful villages in the region. Founded in 1222, jewel of the Bastides Albigeoises - the New Towns of the Middle Ages . It is perched on the top of the mountain and offers the most breathtaking views. You start your walk at the bottom of the village (or you can take a small train!) and wind your way up the steep, cobbled street to the top, on the way passing many local artists studios including painters, sculptors, potters, instrument-makers.

Monestiés Monestiés is a peaceful, harmonious village and is ideal for all those who enjoy discovering the past. Girdled by the "Lices" (walks that cover the length of the former moats and ramparts), the houses huddle around "Saint Pierre" church on the route to Santiago de Compostella.

Albi Albi is a beautiful town with most of the buildings constructed in red brick. It sits on the banks of the River Tarn and has many elegant shops and eating establishments. There are many places of interest in Albi, which include the huge cathedral and the world famous Toulouse-Lautrec museum, which holds 600 of the artists paintings. The Basilica of Sainte Cecile dominates Albi's skyline. The splendour of its workmanship and it's sheer size all contribute to the magic of a visitor's first glimpse of this wonder. The inside is magnificent, covered with murals and carved stone.

Castres Castres is built on the banks of River Agoût. It dates back to around 647 and was built around a Benedictine Abbey on the site of an old roman camp. There are many places of interest, one being the Goya Museum. Opposite the Goya Museum is the St Benoît cathederal which dates from IX century and the Gardens of Evéché were designed by Le Nôtre. Apart from the history Castres is a young and buzzy town and in 1997 it was designated as the most sporting town in France.

Puycelsi  Puycelsi is a fine example of a fortified village. It is perched above the valley of the Vère and surrounded by the forest of Grésigne, the largest area of oak woodland in the south-west of France.

Lautrec Lautrec is renown for its pink variety of garlic and dominates the Agout valley with its high-perched windmill. It owes its fame to the Viscount de Lautrec, a distant ancestor of the painter Toulouse-Lautrec.

Lisle-sur-Tarn Lisle-sur-Tarn, a 13th century, fortified town situated in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards, enjoys an idyllic location half way between Toulouse and Albi.

Castelnau de Montmiral This is a picturesque village perched on a spur of rock high above the Vere Valley and Gresigne Forrest. Castelnau de Montmiralis an old bastide, founded in the 13C by Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse, to replace the stronghold razed during the Albigensian Crusade. Its eventful past is still visible in its old houses, of which have been enhanced by skilful restoration programme.

Najac Stretching along a promontory enclosed in a meander of the Aveyron, on the boundary of Rouergue and Quercy, the ancient village of Najac occupies a remarkable site. The ruins of the fortified castle tower above the slate rooftops of the village.

Belcastel This small village is situated in the Aveyron valley, just 14 miles from Rodez. Protected by the valley's wooded hills, its houses nestle along the riverbank at the foot of the fortified castle.

Sauveterre De Rouergue

Thought to be the largest square with arcades in the Rouergue area (195 ft x 130), and lined with houses with wooden wall sections, Sauveterre-de-Rouergue is the best-preserved "bastide" or fortified town in south west France. Many artists such as painters, sculptors and print manufacturers have chosen to settle there.

Conques Very few sites in France, or even in Europe can boast such a heritage as that of the village of Conques with its Romanesque-style abbey church boasting stained glass windows created by Pierre Soulages, a tympanum depicting the Last Judgement, the remains of the cloister with its large Serpentine pond, its gold treasure and of course the village itself, all seeming to have travelled through time unchanged.

Tarn et Garonne (82)
Montauban The largest town in the Tarn-et-Garonne, Montauban has inherited a remarkable architectural heritage from its rich and tumultuous past. The omnipresent bricks have given rise to the title "pinkest of pink cities". The grid-pattern layout of its streets, characteristic of all fortified towns, dates back to the original town founded in 1144 and remains the historical centre's urban framework to this very day.

St. Antonin-Noble-Val

This town's spectacular position earned it the title "Nobilis Vallis," or Noble Valley. Beneath the towering white cliffs of Anglars Rock, Saint-Antonin lies between the Aveyron and Bonnette Rivers. The townhall, built in 1125, is the oldest in France; now a museum, it displays a remarkable collection of local prehistoric artifacts. Periods of war and prosperity have left their mark on the village making it a living museum of medieval civil architecture unique in France.
